Anniversaries are for taking stock. As Millerton turns 175, here are the milestones that made the village — each one drawn from the historical record.
The Founding Era
- 1788 — The Town of North East is established on March 7, its farms settled by English families from New England and Dutch families from the Hudson Valley. - 1851 — The New York & Harlem Railroad's extension from Dover Plains to Chatham comes through. At a meeting at farmer Walter Wakeman's house, the trackside settlement is named for railroad contractor Sidney G. Miller. The first building goes up the same year. Millerton is born. - 1852 — Alexander Trowbridge, Alexander Holley and James M. Winchell build the Millerton Hotel. - 1854-55 — The Millerton Iron Company's furnace rises at Irondale, soon making car-wheel pig iron from local ore and employing about 150 workers at its height.
The Village Comes of Age
- 1875 — On June 30, the Village of Millerton is formally incorporated. Nathan C. Beach serves as first president. - 1876 — The Millerton Telegraph, a weekly newspaper, begins publishing; the North East Library Association is organized. - 1882 — The county history counts some 600 residents and a Main Street full of merchants — among them druggist Levi P. Hatch, in business about nine years. - 1903 — Benedict Hall, with its landmark clock tower, and the Millerton National Bank building go up. - 1911 — The village's second railroad station opens.
Decline and Reinvention
- 1972 — Passenger rail service between Dover Plains and Chatham ends. - 1980 — On March 28, the last freight train runs to Millerton; the line is abandoned days later. - 1989 — New York State buys 21 miles of the old rail corridor for the Harlem Valley Rail Trail. - 1996 — The rail trail opens, eventually bringing a new stream of visitors through the village. - 2007 — Budget Travel names Millerton one of the Ten Coolest Small Towns in America. - 2020 — The census counts 903 residents, a village bigger than its 1882 self but still resolutely small.
The 175th
- 2026 — From July 11 through 19, Millerton celebrates its 175th anniversary: pop-up events and historic exhibits along Main Street, festivities at the Moviehouse and the NorthEast-Millerton Library, a multi-day fair at Eddie Collins Memorial Park, and a drone light show finale lighting the valley sky on July 17.
One hundred seventy-five years separate the farmhouse meeting from the drone show. The through line is unmistakable: a small village, born of a railroad, that has never stopped finding new ways to stay on the map.
